Now, with his interest in the fish diminishing, he continued deeper into the tunnel until it turned left, sloped downward sharply, then was straight for a considerable stretch.   "Man this part is steep" he thought as he looked about fifty yards down the tunnel, his light illuminating the weird-shaped rocks which protruded from the walls and ceiling.   He swam slowly down the tunnel, still curious about the source of that lime causing the yellow stain on the floor.   Other openings leading off in different directions occurred frequently as he progressed down what seemed to be the main portion of the tunnel.   Suddenly, in the farthest reaches of the beam of his light, he saw again that familiar flash of silver.   He was back on the chase!   Excitedly, he dove down the steep tunnel and raced after the fish, making a sharp turn to the right, then to the left, then straight again.   He caught a glimpse of his fish as it disappeared to the left.   He sped down the tunnel and made the turn, only to receive the shock of his life.   He was in a cavern surrounded by hundreds of Silver Crevice fish of all sizes, all of them scrambling wildly to get away, while he scrambled just as wildly to catch one.   His hand struck several big fish in the wild scramble.   At two different times he was sure he had one in his grasp, but the fish were slipperier than eels.   Finally, he dropped his spear and grabbed at an eighteen-incher with both hands and caught it by the narrow part of its body near its tail.   The fish flipped crazily at first, surprising James with its strength, but there wasn't much the fish could do without the use of its tail.   When he was sure it couldn´t get away, he examined its sleek, silver body, which reflected the glow of his light.

"Wow", he thought, "I've got it right here in my hands, and it's a live catch!" Hunters had killed fish quite often with their spears, but to bring one in alive and unhurt would be a rare achievement.   He felt a satisfied feeling of accomplishment he had never felt before as he clasped the fish in both hands, being careful to keep his grip tight.   He knew that none of the other boys had ever even seen a fish this size, much less caught one alive, and without a weapon!   And now he knew where he could come to get one any time he wanted.   Nobody else would find this place.   He couldn't stop himself from grinning at the thought as he hooked the fish onto his belt and picked up his spear.   "This is it", he thought, as he moved toward the entrance of the cavern, "my first catch, live, and positively a new record for size."   He again thought back to the things which had been said in the group of boys the day before.   Well, this was tomorrow, and yes indeed, this would be the biggest Silver Crevice fish they had ever seen.   He could just imagine the look on Steve´s chubby face when he saw this huge fish without a mark on it.

He exited the cavern and prepared to head back up the tunnel.   The next thing he saw sent a mild chill up his spine.   There were two tunnels, both heading back in roughly the direction from which he had come!   In the excitement of the chase, he had failed to think about marking his trail.   He thought back about the last turn he had made, and didn't think he remembered having passed another opening before entering the fish-filled cavern, but still he wasn't sure.   As he considered for a moment which tunnel to try, he looked down to

check his air supply and nearly dropped to his knees.   Thirty seconds!   He immediatelychecked his five-minute reserve, and found it full, but he realized he was at least twenty minutes away from the nearest air recharge station.   He frantically examined the entrances to both tunnels but was still unsure.   His thoughts started to go wild while another part of him was fighting to think clearly.   Still another part of his mind was crying.   Five minutes was not enough.

Then, strangely, an overwhelming feeling of calmness and control settled over him.   He turned his attention away from the tunnels heading back.   There was no chance of survival going that way, even if he did find the right path.   He simply didn´t have enough time.   It didn´t matter how fast he swam.
